PHP Help

Versión para imprimir | Translate this page

Dreamweaver CS3 and CS4/ Windows.

This extension installs the PHP Manual in CHM format with two options to use it:

The first one is a button installed in the "PHP" tab within the insertbar.

The second option is right-click your mouse button. In the contextual menu you will find:"PHP Function Reference...". Select it and the help will be opened.

In both cases, if you have previously selected a function name, the page where that function is explained will automatically be  opened.

If your selection is not a function name, a prompt message will you inform about it and will ask if you still want to open the PHP Manual

Thanks to French site FlashXpress, there's also a tutorial about how this extension works in French

Current version 7.1.0 (updated April 21, 2009):

  • Support for PHP 5 new Functions and fixed bug affecting location at 'Commands' Menu
  • Bug Fixed: The icon is shown again in the insertbar (thanks to Mark Banks for noticing it)
  • New Feature: The command to install/Upgrade the chm file is launched automatically if there's no help file available (for example, the first time you run the extension).
  • Version 7.0.0 is Windows Vista compatible: It will install the required files outside DW's install path and will use the user Configuration folder instead (avoiding restrictions to install/update the chm files)
  • Version 7.1.0 fixes the hh.exe problem. However, you won't be able to upgrade the chm file included with the extension
Version Compatibilities
Dreamweaver MX PHP Help 5.0.2 (Discontinued due to issues with current chm files from php.net)
Dreamweaver MX 2004
Dreamweaver 8
Dreamweaver CS3 / CS4 PHP Help 7.1.0 (Download, 6MB)

(Notice: You will have to remove previous version if you are upgrading).

Version 7.1.0 has the chm file included, please read the post in my blog explaining the reasons for this.

6.- I'm having a problem, when i try to open the help file, I get a 'can't open hh.exe' like error, even if it's in the windows folder.I tried putting it in C:\, in the dreamweaver folder, but no change.

Tecnorama says: A bit complex, but I think the best idea would be to define the path for hh.exe in your environment variables...

Does anynody know a solution?

7.- I've solved the installation problem noted in the comment immediately below this one. I'm running Vista and found that I needed to run the Extension Manager as Administrator. Then, I had a problem with installing the help file itself, so I had to run Dreamweaver CS3 as Administrator to install the help file. After that it worked. One final small problem, I'm using the extended version of the php manual, but it doesn't seem to show the user notes (which are shown if the file is run on its own). Any ideas about that? Also, the skin is not shown.

Tecnorama says, Yes, that's an issue with Vista that I forgot to mention (ask MS, not me). The skin feature is not accepted by the extension (no plans to implement it, sorry).About the user notes, I would try to reinstal the chm file again: both chm files were in the same folder, right?
UPDATE:This should be no longer a problem with version 7.0.0, since it installs the required files in the user's folder.

8.- When installing into CS3, I get the error message: The file 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS3\Help\phpmanual.chm is being used by Dreamweaver CS3. Please close Dreamweaver CS3 and try again. Closing Dreamweaver doesn't help. Also, there is no file at the location specified in the error message. (The \Help folder doesn't exist at all!)

9.- Yes it is in c:\windows, btw I use CS3 with PHP Help 6.0. This example also works everywhere (if the chm is there): HH mk:@MSITStore:php_manual_en.chm::/_function.html#substr
So I dunno why CS3 can't launch it :(

10.- I get the message: "Unable to launch hh.exe. Please be sure that this application exists and there is enough memory to run it." I get this when I click on PHP Function Reference. hh.exe does exist, I use it for the same function in UltraEdit.

Tecnorama says: The extension assumes that hh.exe is in c:\windows, is it the right path for you?
